Unusual object – 26th April 2009

At 09:50 this morning the volunteers of Skerries Coast Guard were tasked to investigate reports of unusual floating objects. A concerned member of the public had reported sighting the two unusual objects floating near the shore in the area of Donabate beach.

Skerries Coast Guard were on scene within minutes and having spoken to the caller, conducted a shoreline search. Skerries Coast Guard monitored the two objects and determined that no further action was required.

Remember, If you see someone in difficulty in the water (sea, river or lake) or on the cliffs, or even if you think you see someone in difficulty, diall 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard – do not assume someone else has made the call.

First aid training – spinal transfer

This evening, the Skerries Coast Guard volunteers conducted a scenario based training exercise in casualty assessment and spinal injuries.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This involved locating a casualty, initial assessment, immobilisation using a spinal collar and then transfer to board.

Report of distress flare – 19th April 2009

At 23:50 the volunteers of Skerries Coast Guard were paged by the Coast Guard’s Marine Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC Dublin) to investigate public reports of a possible flare sighting. A concerned member of the public had sighted what appeared to be a red marine distress flare deployed North of Skerries.

Skerries Coast Guard were on scene within minutes and conducted a shoreline search. Visibility was good and there were several fishing vessels in the area. Nothing unusual was found and the team were stood down by MRCC.
