This afternoon, several members of the Skerries Coast Guard team visited the Rosslare Coast Guard station to pass on the 2010 JSAR shield. Also present at the handover were Jim Griffin (Dublin JSAR team captain & OiC of nearby Dunmore East CG) and Niall Ferns (CG Sector Manager).

As you will recall, the Dublin team won the JSAR shield at the competition last May. The Dublin team comprised of volunteers from several different CG stations and the Shield will be held by each of those stations until its return to the JSAR event next year.

This weekend, two members of Skerries Coast Guard, Johnny and Stephen, will be heading to Mulroy, Co Donegal at the annual Joint Search And Rescue (JSAR) competition. This competition involves members of both the Irish Coast Guard and members of HM Coast Guard Northern Ireland. Johnny and Stephen have been selected to represent the Coast Guard’s Dublin division at the event. The Irish Coast Guard’s Mulroy unit is hosting the event this year.

Now in it’s 5th year, the JSAR competition aims to increase the professionalism of all participants and to enhance co-operation between both rescue services through friendly competition. At the event, the participants will be faced with a series of realistic emergency situations which they may encounter throughout their rescue services. The competition will test key rescue skills such as leadership, search planning, chart work, first aid, helicopter operations and communications.

Two members from the Skerries Coast Guard unit have been chosen to participate in the Joint Search And Rescue (JSAR) games. JSAR is an annual competition in which teams are assessed on their ability to complete a number of search and rescue based scenarios. This year the competition will be held in Howth harbour on Saturday 10th of May.

Preparation for the event involved intensive training in Wicklow and Mullingar over the past number of months. The training covered power-boating, navigation, leadership, water and land based rescue and teamwork.

The event is open to the public and promises to be a highly entertaining day out. The theme will be “Coastguards now and then”, and will feature exciting displays from the National Transport Museum, and an array of rescue equipment from present day and years gone by.
