Skerries Coast Guard featured on RTE 1’s Firefighters – 24th September 2013

Members of the Skerries Coast Guard team were featured on tonight’s Firefighters program on RTE 1. The hugely insightful and popular Firefighters series follows the rescues of Dublin Fire Brigade as they respond to a variety of incidents around the capital. In tonight’s episode, DFB units based at Swords and Skerries responded to a vehicle incident on a shoreline near Loughshinny. Helmet cameras worn by some of the DFB crew captured the dramatic nighttime rescue.

All four of the State’s emergency services attended the scene (Ambulance Services, Fire Brigade, Gardai, and Coast Guard) and each contributed a vital element to the successful rescue of the casualty. The casualty was evacuated from the scene by Coast Guard helicopter, with a highline winch transfer used.

The program can be viewed for a limited time only on RTE Player

Arrival of The Pole – Sea Memorial to Red Island

This morning, the Skerries Coast Guard team provided an escort for the final leg of the arrival of The Pole Sea Memorial to its installation site at Red Island. The memorial will serve to remember all those lost at sea along the nearby coast and from the area. The pole is modelled on the original Coast Guard Breeches Buoy training pole, of which there were three sited on the Red Island headland many years ago.

The completed memorial will include individual plaques dedicated to all those lost at sea along the nearby coast or from the area, and will be unveiled by President Higgins at a public ceremony at Red Island on Sunday 29th September 2013.

Beach closure at Skerries

Update 13th July 2013 – This morning, Fingal County Council reopened the North Beach to swimmers after the water was declared safe. The vessel involved in the diesel spill was righted and moved to shallow waters in the harbour overnight.

12th July 2013 – Following on from this morning’s incident at Skerries harbour where a fishing vessel had sunk overnight, small amounts of diesel fuel remain in the water in the area. As a precautionary measure, Fingal County Council have closed nearby bathing areas, including the North Beach. Additionally, pollution booms and soakage mats have been place in the vicinity of the sunken vessel to limit the drift of any further diesel.

The Coast Guard have been monitoring the situation since the early hours of the morning when the spill was first reported. Whilst only a very small amount of diesel was on board the vessel, the liquid had dispersed and drifted with the ebbing tide. The Coast Guard’s rescue helicopter from Dublin, R116, has been carrying out aerial views to monitor the situation. The Skerries Coast Guard team are also carrying out regular inspections of the area. The diesel fuel is expected to evaporate from the water over the course of today.

Further updates will be provided in due course.
