Exercise with Coast Guard helicopter – 24 August 2014

Early this morning the Skerries Coast Guard team were out in force at Red Island, Skerries for a routine training exercise with the Coast Guard’s Dublin based Sikorsky helicopter. The team selected and prepared the landing site, deploying smoke flares to assist the helicopter crew with wind speed/direction assessment. The Sikorsky S92 helicopter, EI-ICR, landed on at Red Island at 09:30, having made the trip from its base at Dublin Airport in approximately 10 minutes.

The Skerries team were also joined by their fellow volunteers from the neighbouring station of Clogherhead Coast Guard. All members took part in a briefing and practical exercise, covering key SAR operational procedures.

The helicopter departed shortly before 12:00, after completing a winching exercise at the Red Island site. The Skerries Coast Guard team would like to thank all the public fo complying with the directions of Coast Guard personnel while this exercise took place.

Joint Training with Balbirggan Order of Malta Amblance Corps- 11th September 2013

This evening, the Skerries Coat Guard team took part in a joint training exercise with the Balbriggan Order of Malta Ambulance Corps. This exercise took place at the Skerries Coast Guard station on Red Island and included a detailed brief of the Order’s Emergency Ambulance. Many thanks to the Balbriggan OMAC for this enjoyable and insightful joint exercise.

Pyrotechnic training at Skerries – 21st August 2013

The evening the Skerries Coast Guard team conducted a pyrotechnic training exercise at Red Island, Skerries. This involved the firing of several white parachute rocket flares. These flares are used by Coast Guard search teams during night time operations to illuminate large areas of the shoreline.

Joint Exercise at Clogherhead CG & Incidents – 14th August 2013

This evening, members of the Skerries Coast Guard team accepted an invitation from their neighbouring station of Clogherhead Coast Guard to attend a joint training exercise at Clogherhead.

During this exercise, the Clogherhead CG team were tasked to assist with a casualty injured on a headland near the station. Members of the Skerries Coast Guard team assisted Clogherhead CG with the successful extraction and treatment of the casualty.

Meanwhile, shortly before 22:00 the remaining Skerries Coast Guard team back at the Skerries CG base were paged to investigate reports of red flares sighted North of Balbriggan. The team conducted a coastline search of the area with nothing to report. Both the Skerries and Clogherhead lifeboats were also tasked to investigate the flare reports. No further action was required and the team returned to base.
